Action Mechanism & Clinical Use of METHOPAS

METHOPAS acts as a folate antagonist. By inhibiting dihydrofolate reductase and related folate-dependent pathways, it reduces the production of nucleotides needed for DNA synthesis and cell division.

Rapidly dividing malignant cells may be particularly affected. At lower doses, methotrexate also modifies immune and inflammatory activity, which is why it may be used in selected autoimmune diseases.

Important Safety Information — METHOTREXATE TABLETS IP 2.5 mg

Regular blood counts and assessment of liver and kidney function are generally required. The treating specialist may also monitor for mouth ulcers, infection, bruising, bleeding, breathing problems, gastrointestinal toxicity, and other adverse effects.

Methotrexate can cause serious or life-threatening toxicity involving the bone marrow, liver, lungs, kidneys, gastrointestinal tract, skin, and nervous system. Urgent medical review is required for severe mouth sores, fever, unusual bleeding, persistent vomiting or diarrhoea, jaundice, reduced urination, rash, or new shortness of breath.

Methotrexate can cause embryo-fetal harm, including fetal death. It is contraindicated during pregnancy when used for non-neoplastic diseases. Patients of reproductive potential should discuss pregnancy testing, contraception, fertility considerations, and breastfeeding restrictions with their healthcare professional.

Patients should tell the prescriber about all medicines and supplements, especially medicines that may affect the kidneys, liver, bone marrow, or methotrexate elimination. Live vaccines are generally avoided during treatment unless specifically approved by the treating specialist.

METHOPAS must be taken only under close supervision by a physician experienced in methotrexate therapy. Patients must not start, stop, repeat, or change the dose without explicit medical instructions.
